Tax settings

The Tax settings page controls how tax is calculated on sales, with a default rate and optional overrides.

Getting there

  • Where: Settings → Tax.
  • Permission: the brands resource.

What you can set

  • Brand Default: your studio's default tax rate (for example 0.08 for 8%).
  • Location Rules: override the default for specific locations.
  • Product Rules: override the rate for specific products.

How overrides apply

Each sale line uses the most specific rule that applies, in this order:

  1. The product's own rate, if it has one.
  2. The sale location's rate, if the sale names a location that has one.
  3. The brand default.

A sale rung up with no location set skips step 2 and uses the brand default. So does a sale at a location marked Inherited.

A product rate of 0 is an override, not an absence: a zero-rated product stays untaxed even at a location that charges tax.

On the Products page, each item's Tax column shows whether the rate is Inherited (from a location or the brand default) or an Override.

Memberships and credit packs sold at the register are never taxed.

Tips

  • Enter rates as decimals, 0.08 means 8%.
  • Set the Brand Default first, then add Location or Product rules only where the rate differs.
  • Tax is recalculated from these rules when the sale is rung up, not when the item is added to the cart. Changing a rate mid-sale asks the cashier to reconfirm the new total.
